What's new in the world of travel?

Monday, March 07, 2011

With the travel world constantly expanding, we have hunted out the top five things you should do and see in 2011.

1. Spotlight on the capital
Visitors to the nation's capital will be able to see the city in a different light this autumn, with a new annual event during the month-long Canberra Festival.

The city's attractions will be illuminated with special lighting effects as part of Enlighten: See Canberra in a whole new light, which will be held over four nights on March 11, 12, 18 and 19.

Bands will also perform against the backdrop of Lake Burley Griffin. Visit http://enlightencanberra.com/ for more details.

2. Low-cost European base
Ever fantasised about spending a few months discovering the delights of life in a cute European village? A new website, www.myeuropebase.com, set up by an Australian couple, is offering travellers the chance to rent low-cost bases near low-cost airports throughout Europe. Its launch property is a group of apartments at Zell an der Mosel in Germany's Rheinland, near Hahn Airport's Ryanair hub.

Rates for long-term stays start at $200 a week, low season, and from $350 a week, high season.

3. Following in Great footsteps
History buffs can trace the life of Alexander the Great back to his birthplace and early life in Greece with a one-off In the Footsteps of Alexander the Great tour through Peter Sommer Travels in May.

The company's original expedition that covers ancient Turkey was judged one of the world's 10 best educational holidays by National Geographic Traveller magazine last year.

The 20-day tour costs £4275 ($A6890), excluding international flights, and visits Olympia, Athens and other cities that played a key role in the development of Macedonia.

4. Easy guide to green travel
Conscientious travellers will be able to easily identify eco-friendly options via a new website, www.green.travel. Sustainable Travel International launched the site to connect environmentally, socially and economically responsible travellers with sustainable travel companies around the world. Travel companies will be rated through a five-step program in regards to their sustainability practices and its online booking program will automatically take 1 per cent of a client's reservation costs and donate it to a sustainable travel initiative.

5. Top chefs for Hamilton
Melbourne chefs Frank Camorra and Dan Hunter will be among the line-up for the Great Barrier Feast on Hamilton Island this year. They will join qualia resort's Jane-Therese Mulry and wine critic James Halliday from July 22 to 24. Two-night packages at Boutique Beach Club start at $1115 a person, twin share.

Will these make your list of things to do in 2011? What else would you add to as your top things to do this year?
